In January 2012, IUCC was granted membership in PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe. Israel is now one of the 25 countries who collaborate in PRACE. Israeli researchers, in academia and industry, can now enjoy free access to this multimillion Euro resource. PRACE supercomputers are ranked among the fastest in the world and cost in excess of €400 million, funded by the European Union.

Systems deployed by PRACE are expected to reach capabilities of one Exaflops/s (one quintillion) by 2020. Access to these resources is part of IUCC’s commitment to keep pace with the needs of Israel’s scientific and research communities, and an important step towards Israel obtaining its own supercomputer. Using PRACE’s Tier-0 HPC systems, researchers can run experiments and simulations at a rate of one or more Petaflops/s (one quadrillion operations per second).

As a member, IUCC professionals participate in several important PRACE project teams, such as training and outreach. These teams help define supercomputing networks and access – for today and tomorrow. In addition, Israel is scheduled to host the 2014 PRACE Winter School, an intensive graduate level course in high performance computing that will bring students and researchers from across Europe to Israel.

The PRACE Research Infrastructure is open to Israeli research and projects deemed to have significant European and international impact. Projects are reviewed via a bi-annual call for proposals and evaluated by leading scientists and engineers in a peer-review process.
