eduroam (education roaming) is the global SSID for National Research & Education Networks. eduroam is secure, worldwide network access service for the international research and education community. With hundreds of thousands of wireless access-points sharing a common SSID (wireless access point identifier), eduroam acts as one large, worldwide, wireless hotspot.
This worldwide network of RADIUS (authentication) servers facilitates network access for roaming academic users using IEEE 802.1x as the vehicle. Today’s common operating systems are shipped with 802.1x supplicants, making joining eduroam simple for users and simple to support for educational institutions. eduroam’s use of 802.1x in concert with RADIUS means the network is built around well understood, established, and easy to manage standards which are often already deployed within the network infrastructure of educational institutions. eduroam provides per-user, per-session encrypted network access for visitors from participating institutions. Connectivity is instantaneous and the infrastructure is authenticated by the parent institution.

Connect to eduroam

Connecting to an eduroam site should be very similar to connecting to your home institution’s network. You use the same authentication method, encryption and user name/password (or certificate). The only thing that might differ is how you connect to the network. You can use an Ethernet connection or wireless (currently only wireless connections are supported in all the above mentioned Israeli universities that carry the eduroam service).
Your local IT administrator must provide you with all the necessary details on how to connect to your local network.
Joining eduroam
With hundreds of thousands of wireless access-points sharing a common SSID, eduroam acts as one large, worldwide, wireless hotspot. This benefits visiting faculty and researchers, foreign students, visitors attending activities, and local academic exchange. By joining eduroam, you extend the network to visitors at your institution without adding any additional maintenance responsibilities to your IT staff. Moreover, by extending the network, you help to guarantee access to your own students and faculty while they are abroad.
eduroam removes the administrative steps required to provide access to visitors from other educational institutions. Access between networks from NRENs is negotiated once for all members of participating institutions.
